Newport,

North Carolina

Newport is a small town of about 4,000 people situated just off US70, halfway between

Havelock (home of Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station) and

Morehead City, North Carolina (home of the North Carolina Seafood Festival).

It is normally very quiet except for the occasional train that passes through.

Newport After Dark

How many times have you been in a town,

looked up in the sky and been able to see a sky like this?

Starry Sky

It may not always be this clear but most nights you can still see the stars even in town.

The Newport Community Park

When the weather is warm,

on Friday nights from 7:00 - 10:00 pm,

there's "Pickin' in the Park".

If you like Bluegrass, Country and Gospel music,

just bring your lawn chair, sit back and enjoy it.

It's free for all and anyone with musical talent is welcome to join in.

At times there has been between 200 and 300 people either singing or just listening.

When the weather turns cold, it is moved inside to the fire station

and only held every other Friday night.

Newport Pig Cooking Contest

During  the first weekend in April,

the Largest Whole Hog Cooking Contest in the US

is held in the park.
